I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, I have recently added superantispyware and Malwarebytes. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I have just upgraded to AVG free 8.5 and all seems good so far. Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps
References :
A Firewall is a security measure used to separate your Local Area Network and the outside world. This includes not only blocking outsiders from gaining access to your network, but controling the information requested by a user inside the network.

Obviously "Vote Me" is not looking to win this one. I suppose he has never used Open Source software either.

If you're worried about the firewall software interfering with your operating system, maybe you should consider using a hardware firewall instead. You could use something like one of the Linksys models. I will caveat this however: in order to really be secure using a hardware (or software) firewall, you should not only configure it to prevent incoming ports, but also restrict what's allowed to go out. You should also change the default passwords and network addresses. There are new phishing scams going on using these default pieces of information to reroute DNS addresses to the attackers DNS so that they can steal your identify or other information. It's really common sense, but most people just want to get up and running, without considering the security ramifications of doing so.

I will note that I'm a open source proponent and feel that both Zone Alarm and Comodo are excellent products and that there are such things as free, good software out there. If Zone Alarm messed up your system, maybe there's something else wrong with it that should be further investigated.

Sincerely,
Don
References :
http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1123638171618&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper
